Believe the hype: today is officially the most depressing day of the year…

Well, not really – but there’s no denying January can be particularly miserable.

Whether it’s getting dumped (welcome to break-up season), giving up the diet, the dark and freezing weather, having no money… Sorry, we didn’t mean to make you feel even worse.

Anyway, we’ve rounded up some emergency pictures to cheer everyone up, along with some helpful life advice.

We’ve all heard that today is supposed to be the ‘most depressing day of the year’.

It’s been pumped out by PR firms for more than a decade, but is ‘Blue Monday’ actually just trivialising real mental health issues?

Mental health charity Mind have launched a counter campaign – #BlueAnyDay – to dispel the myth that there is one magical day of the year where we feel most depressed.

Just in case you needed something else to be terrified of, it turns out you can get frostbite on your eye.

And we don’t mean on your eyelid – we mean you can get frostbite on your actual eyeball.

One unfortunate woman, Brenda Mackey, had to leave an sledding race in Alaska after she contracted the rare condition.

Temperatures were in ‘the low single digits’ farenheit – or minus temperatures in celcius – according to Alaska Dispatch News.

Is this breast enhancement crowd funding site the creepiest thing on the internet?
‘Invest in breasts!’ screams myfreeimplants.com (Picture: MyFreeImplants.com)

There is actually a website where random people can donate money for women’s breast implants.

The site, myfreeimplants.com, says it has been operating since 2005. It’s a place where women crowdsource ‘donations’ towards their surgery in exchange for messages, photos and videos of themselves.

Unsurprisingly, it has been called ‘degrading’ and ‘inappropriate’ by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

What actually happens if you hold your pee in for way too long?

| blog, Health, L&B World, Weird | January 17, 2016

Your kidneys probably won't burst... probably
Your kidneys probably won’t burst… probably

We’ve all been there – when you really need to go, but you have to hold it in for whatever reason.

It’s deeply unpleasant, and involves a lot of foot-tapping, leg-crossing, unattractive dancing around.

But what happens if you hold it in for too long?

Years of regularly holding your pee in can increase your risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and a condition where your bladder can’t fully empty, known as urinary retention.

Monsters Inc - need to pee

‘The bladder’s kind of like a pond,’ Gerald Timm, a urological researcher at the University of Minnesota, Read the full story

Congratulations if you made it a fortnight into January while still eating vaguely healthily.

(We’re not bitter at all, you wellness freaks with energy radiating from every cell.)

Lots of people chose to cut out milk for the New Year, so last week we set out the reasons why dairy can be bad, particularly for people who struggle with acne.

But if you’ve cut out milk, it might be time to evaluate whether you feel any better – or if you’re just needlessly avoiding an important food group.

An injured British backpacker is out of immediate danger in hospital in Thailand after an urgent appeal for blood donors on Facebook.

Queues of people reportedly turned up at the hospital today offering to give the relatively rare type of blood needed by Lucy Hill.

The 21-year-old from Bury, Greater Manchester, suffered serious injuries when her moped was involved in a crash with a car in Chiang Mai on Saturday.

The plea had only gone out very recently and the response has been huge.

Ms Hill, a recent graduate at Leeds Beckett University, underwent emergency surgery but friends appealed online for donations… Read the full story

A girl has put out a desperate plea for blood after her best friend was knocked off her moped while travelling in Thailand.

Junior doctors take the mick out of claims they ‘live the high life’

| blog, Health, junior doctors, L&B World, UK | January 11, 2016

Junior doctors have been ripping it out of reports that branded strike leaders ‘Moet medics’.

They claimed they were balling in ski resorts and exotic beaches, enjoying ‘lavish holidays and parties’.

The doctors in question were somewhat baffled, asking if they would rather they took no annual leave and didn’t live in houses.

It led to the brilliant hashtag #smearthedocs, where doctors posted photos of themselves living their ordinary lives (not much genuine Moet in sight).
