sliding

Normal ways of getting to work include buses, trains, cars or old fashioned walking.

So far, so – well, pedestrian. It’s not exactly the most thrilling part of the day. But commuters in St Petersburg have found a way to spice up their morning stroll.

They have cleared away the slush and snow caked up on the pavement to create a slide which they can zip down like Torville and Dean.

Try not to feel too jealous of officials across Russia.

They’ve reportedly been handed a 400-page book of ‘prophetic’ quotes by President Vladimir Putin as a New Year gift.

Business newspaper RBK reports that as many as 1,000 officials received a copy of Words That Change the World, a book that should, according to one of Putin’s top aides, be treated as a guide to the Kremlin’s ‘values and guiding principles.’

Vyacheslav Volodin calls it ‘required reading for any politician.’

These are the cities the US almost nuked to smithereens in the Cold War

| blog, L&B World, Russia, World | December 24, 2015

A ‘target list’ of cities where America was prepared to drop nuclear bombs during the Cold War has been released for the first time.

The document, declassified this week, includes dense civilian populations in Beijing, Moscow, Leningrad, East Berlin, and Warsaw chosen because of the number of people there.

According to scholars from the National Security Archive, the list includes ‘chilling details’, including an admission that civilians and ‘friendly forces and people’ would be exposed to high levels of deadly radioactive fallout.

In addition, there were plans for ‘systematic destruction’ of city targets which explicitly included ‘population’ in all cities, including Beijing, Moscow, Leningrad, East Berlin, and Warsaw.

This ‘directly conflicted’ with international norms prohibiting attacks intended specifically for people, the study claimed.

Vladimir Putin has ordered the Russian military to ‘act in a very tough way’ against any threat to its forces in Syria.

During a meeting with in Moscow he advised defense officials to ‘immediately destroy’ targets and warned rival forces against ‘further provocations’.

The warning follows an earlier statement about using nuclear weapons during the conflict in Syria.

His orders come a month after Turkish forces downed a Russian Su-24 bomber over the Syrian border, triggering a bitter feud between the two military forces.

Russia started carrying out air strikes in Syria in September at the request of Putin’s ally President Bashar al-Assad.
